For those people that don’t like to type, the new iPad (iPad 3) comes with dictation support and can now be used for entering text into a field on the form. In my brief testing with this new feature, I found the translation to be quite good although not perfect. To invoke dictation, tap on the microphone key and begin speaking. When you’re finished speaking, tap on the microphone again to turn it off.
To get punctuation and carriage returns to work, you need to speak the following words “comma”, “period”, “new line” and “new paragraph”.
My testing was done using the new iPad WI-FI version. Although I was not able to confirm this, I believe a network connection to Apple’s Siri servers is required for the speech recognition to work.
